painting with oil
I think this post belongs here..
I thought of trying out how the old masters made matte paintings, then it became just a painting.
First I made a concept of what it could look like
Then I realized that I have to make it a lot bigger to add more detail and started a new one using the concept as a reference. Though I think I went too far from the original. The concept was ~1000 meters above the ground and the detailed version is 20 meters above the ground. Now it seems that there is more detail and it's more clear what we are looking at it seems to be missing a clear focus point.
Also now that the camera is closer to the ground, you would expect that smoke to be moving. I still might continue this as just a painting just to see what else can I fail at.
Because failing makes you smarter, right?

Oh.. Those images doesn't scale and the horizontal scrolling is missing!
edit: And it seems like BBCode resize doesn't work either.

Re: painting with oil
Its great practice to do traditional painting, I still love to get the oil paints out whenever I get the opportunity (which unfortunately is rare)
And yes, you definitely learn more from your failures than your successes! Thanks for sharing these!
